about

CAZZAROLA! The musical soundtrack for the novel by
Norman Nawrocki & amici (friends)

CAZZAROLA!, the CD, is a 100-minute long musical soundtrack for Nawrocki's novel of the same name. It contains original & traditional Italian-themed songs composed & recorded in Italy & Canada.

Produced in collaboration with 25 musicians from Italy & Montreal, the Italian-flavored mega-album contains 31 tracks in English, Italian & Romani. The music & lyrics were inspired by or related to his novel. (CAZZAROLA! Anarchy, Romani, Love, Italy, PM Press, Oakland 2013, and CAZZAROLA! Anarchia, Rom, Amore, Italia, Editrice Il Sirente, Rome 2018).

This is Nawrocki’s 24th album since 1986.

CAZZAROLA!, the CD, ranges from Italian folk to contemporary Italian-themed compositions that are folkloric, ambient, electro-acoustic, somewhat ‘indie’ & ‘world beat.’

Waltzes, folk dances, love ballads, prisoner songs & soundscapes are arranged chronologically from 1880 to today following the story in the book. It’s 130 years of Italian history told through music.

Among Nawrocki’s collaborators:
• Italian bands like DisCanto, an Abruzzo folkloric ensemble he met in Italy while doing field research for the album;
• Panachrome, a Montreal jazz group;
• the Romani band from Toronto, E Zhivindi Yag.
Three of his own Montreal bands – Crocodile!, DaZoque!, & SANN – also contributed tracks, as did other musicians from Italy & Canada.

For the first time Nawrocki, a composer/violinist, actually sings on a few tracks. ‘I'm not a singer & would never pretend to call myself one,’ he says, ‘but, some songs needed to be sung, so I grabbed the mic.’

The album was co-produced with legendary Montreal sound engineer, David Sturton (Jean LeLoup, Bran Van 3000, etc.).
CAZZAROLA! was released by Les Pages Noires (Montreal, 2016).

‘Cazzarola! is pretty awesome (both the CD and the book)’
– Escape Velocity Radio

‘A haunting yet still soothing soundtrack for his novel’
– The Gazette, Montreal

‘Nawrocki presents one of his most ambitious recordings of his long career: a soundtrack for his novel of the same name, Cazzarola! Dozens of musicians participate, including the ex-Rhythm Activism guitarist, Sylvain Côté & Norman's bands DaZoque! & Crocodile! The album combines street sounds & field recordings in Italy, with traditional Italian instruments & contemporary music. The mix is a success!"
– L'ATTAQUE
