about

'The Nawrockis Live' is the dynamic first album from the popular Canadian-Ukrainian-Polish violin / ukulele duo, The Nawrockis – siblings Norman & Vivian Nawrocki.

The toe-tapping ten-song collection of traditional folk instrumentals was recorded live at a benefit for Ukrainian humanitarian aid. It captures all the excitement & energy of their live show & features The Nawrockis playing beloved Ukrainian & Polish folk melodies at the Port Coquitlam, BC Legion Hall.

Heartfelt, upbeat, reflective & soul stirring, this first album for the Vancouver & Montreal based sibling duo (Norman’s 33rd) celebrates their rich Canadian-Ukrainian-Polish cultural heritage.

Some songs are centuries old from south-west Ukraine and eastern Poland. Others from the Canadian Prairies. The tracks represent a sampling of the duo's extensive repertoire.

Although they grew up in a musical family, the siblings only started playing together in the last few years. They’ve performed for appreciative audiences from Vancouver to Winnipeg while their multiple online music videos have garnered them tens of thousands of fans.

Their live shows are always engaging, theatrical, & peppered with musical surprises. On stage, multi-instrumentalist/singer Vivian uses her treated ukulele, drum machine & effects pedals to create layers of beats & music. Norman breaks into solos or improvisations & uses looping pedals to sculpt soundscapes with his treated violin.

Based in Montreal, Norman has an international reputation as a violinist, frontman, composer & recording artist. He’s a veteran of the city’s underground music scene & has co-founded numerous bands like DaZoque!, Rhythm Activism, Bakunin’s Bum, Wild Plains, etc.

He tours North America, Europe & elsewhere & has released 33 albums & 35 compilations solo & with his other bands. Also an author & playwright, his recent series of dramatic plays deals with the lives of Ukrainian immigrants in Canada & Ukrainian history.

Vancouver-based Vivian is an accomplished pianist, ukulele singer, composer & performer who also plays percussion, accordion, keyboards, wind instruments & occasionally sings. She composed & played music for Norman’s series of recent Ukrainian themed plays.

Over the past few years she has delighted indie music crowds from Vancouver to Montreal with her quirky renditions & interpretations of early '60's pop hits & her own arrangements of historical songs from Joe Hill to Stompin’ Tom Connors.

The album is an online release (Les Pages Noires, Montreal, 2023) only available here.
